Burchell's Coucal | Table Mountain from the top | Chironia baccifera Wild Gentian |
CAPETOWN: Our first six days will be spent in and around the ‘Mother City’, and are carefully planned to maximise our time in this beautiful place.
On the first day we visit Kirstenbosch Gardens, with a walk beneath the mountains and lunch. Excellent birding, with Cape Sugarbird and the Yellow-bellied Sunbird, both endemic are easily seen. Table Mountain (weather permitting) needs an early start! A walk and lunch on top of the mountain gives us time to enjoy the stunning views, plant and birdlife. (Put In) At this time of year three orchids may be photographed and enjoyed.
Robben Island requires a short boat trip ,which is an optional extra for your own account, and should the weather be inclement, a visit the Cape Town Castle is full of exciting history.
Our day on the peninsula travelling via Ou Kaapse Weg is breathtaking. The Cape Point Nature Reserve is wild and pristine and stands majestically between the two oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The scenery and plant life is one of the most bio-diverse in the world. We return on the other side of the peninsula travelling through quaint fishing villages, and time permitting we stop at Simonstown and FishHoek.

Rock Hyrax, Dassie | Whale watching in Hermanus | Cape Leucospermum conocarodendron viridum |
Another full day from Cape Town takes us to the Franschoek Valley, a romantic valley set in one of the wine capitals of the world, makes our time here memorable. Paarl Rock is set in a Nature Reserve and a slow walk is rewarding. Stellenbosch with its old oak trees and quaint streets and buildings lends itself to a ‘university’ town with its own student radio station.
The WINELANDS is where we will base ourselves on a wine and fruit farm for three nights. Here life is slow and the quaint villages of Paarl and Wellington, take in places where time stands still. There’s time to relax on a wine farm, birding on a walk in the vineyards and fruit orchards. The spectacular Bain’s Kloof Pass, an old route built in 1853 by Andrew Geddes Bains is one of the most picturesque roads in the Cape. Here leopard still roam wild and we may see flocks of Blue Crane as we travel a part of The Blue Crane Route. We visit Worcester and its Botanical Gardens doing a round trip returning via Du Toits Kloof Pass.
The OVERBERG is a stunning area, and this is our next adventure as we travel to HERMANUS for five nights. Leaving the Swartland we pass the scenic countryside and towns of Worcester, Villiersdorp, and on past the Threewatersklooof Dam, to Hermanus at the sea. We spend a day in Hermanus , walking through the harbour, whale-watching (in season). There’s a visit to a small wine farm which exports world famous Chardonney. Taking a mountain drive we enjoy stunning views over the town and take a look at the fynbos. A day on the coastline exploring to the west, takes us to Kleinmond and Bettys Bay with a visit to a National Botanic Garden. To the East lies Walker Bay, Gans Bay and Danger Point. Five nature reserves all fall under Walker Bay Nature Reserve and dot the landscape on our way to Danger Point.
On our last day we travel back to Cape Town via Gordons Bay and Sir Lowry’s Pass. We make our way back to the Cape Town International Airport by mid afternoon.
