PONDOLAND TO PONGOLA

Wild Flowers, Birds and Game animals
Durban Return
14 days (non malarial)
An extended 19 day trip will include Wakkerstroom and Spioenkop areas. Mid February

There are exciting places on this trip, from the south of KwaZulu Natal, with a botanical 'hot spot' on the Wild Coast to 'bushveld and game country' in the north. The coastal reserve has a high number of endemic and/or threatened species and is thus of great global botanical importance. The scenic beauty of both reserves makes this tour an exciting mix of experiences.

In the gorges of the south where the rivers reach the sea, hundreds of plants have yet to be named. Easy walks take us to one of the world's CPD's Centre of Plant Diversity, with many endemics and birdlife which includes Knysna Turaco, Knysna Woodpecker and Spotted Thrush. Samango Monkeys, bushbuck and Chacma Baboon live in the gorges where towering cliffs of evergreen coastal scarp forests push their way to the sea.

Going north through the historical sites of the Boer War we travel the 'Nguni Route' of open savannah grasslands. A Bushveld and Game 'safari' with birding and botanising whilst tracking game and observing animal behaviour is an unforgettable experience. We spend 4 nights in a Game Reserve near the Pongola River where over 900 plant species have been recorded and 350 tree species can be found. Of the 80 mammal species you are likely to see blue wildebeest, impala, giraffe, red hartebeest, kudu, eland, tsessebe, Burchell's zebra and warthog, not to mention elephants and black and white rhino. The bird list reaches over 320 species and the geology is fascinating with layers of shale and quartizite of the Mozaan Group being accumulated in the Pongola Basin 3 000 million years ago.

Please note:
For the nights we spend in the Natal Midlands, dinners will be for your own A/C as we will be using the lovely restaurants in the area.
